I just wanted to express my sympathy and sorrow to the people of Spain for the horrible tragedy. My thoughts are with the families of the dead and injured.

Amen to that. For those of us in the U.S., it certainly brings back a flood of memories and emotions. We know exactly how the people of Spain are feeling right now.

I just want to say that while Madrid and Sept 11 was a terrible loss, the people in Northern Ireland have suffered this for over 30 years ...... so we know how this feels.

Yes, you have. And I must say that until 9/11, I didn't truly understand that.
However, I also understand the pain and shock that Spain feels. When you haven't had this happen before, it's easy to isolate yourself. Yes, you hear the news from other parts of the world, and probably say, Gosh that's really a shame. But when it happens to you unexpectedly and out of the blue, it shakes you to the core (and only afterward gives you a greater understanding of what other countries have been going through for many years).

Thanks spitfire - we may be a small country/island but sometimes we are forgotten, even though we are still part of the United Kingdom.
