Has anyone heard of a compay called HomeTech? (http://www.hometechinc.net/)  They offer jobs transcribing tapes from home, mostly for insurance companies.  They send you the tape, you type and email it to them by their deadline (they rent transcription machines for $20/mo).  It sounds great to me, and their website looks good. I'm going to look into it. I'd just like to know if anyone here has had a satisfying/unsatisfying experience with a company like this.

I remember we had a thread a long while ago about this sort of ad and how it was nearly always a scam. However, I checked them out with the better business bureau and they don't have any black marks against them (which is not the same as being legitimate). http://www.thebbb.org/commonreport.html?bid=89000008. Check for the scam signs - being asked to pay to register is one - and be wary if you follow this up.

Another option are virtual assistants.  They can do the same type of projects and you can build a one on one relationship when you are overloaded with work.  We are working out the bugs but put up a Virtual Assistant database on DeskDemon were you can search by transcription.

I need to reformat that whole section next week and work out the bugs in the search, but the database is starting to grow and does have list of VAs with transcription skills.

Hi Susan

I rather think Oz is looking for work rather than looking for someone to do work for her, am I right Oz?

Yes, I'm thinking of working FOR this company. It would be more likely to be a fill-in between jobs thing for me, though, as they do not offer insurance and I'm not sure how steady the work would be.

Ahh, then I would be very careful.  Make sure you do more research then you would normally.  I have never heard of this company one way or another.

I am also looking for work doing the same type of transcription at home.  I did apply one time to a company that sounded great.  The guy liked my work and then his business never boomed and I never heard back from them.  I was also wondering where can I find a legitimate type of business so I can make extra money and not leave home.

I was also thinking of setting up a virtual assistant website for myself but don't know where to start.  Can anyone give me hints on how to start my own business?

Hi Oz,

I would be VERY skeptical about this business. Why should you have to PAY $20 a month to rent the transcription machine?  If they sincerely want you to work, you shouldn't have to pay a dime. What if you get this machine and no work and you are shelling out $20 a month? I'm sure they would probably ask for your credit card number and automatically charge it each month.  I smell something rotten and would advise you against signing up.

Whitesatin has raised a very important point here.  You might find yourself "renting" a transcription machine - with no guarantee of work!

Just a thought if you are looking to do typing at home--my local hospital is currently advertising for an at-home transcriptionist, 20-25 hours per week.  I'm sure you'd need a basic knowledge of medical terminology, but you may want to check out hospitals in your area to see if they offer the same thing.  I'm not sure what the equipment requirements are.

Yes, that is indeed a concern--that this so-called work may not be steady enough to afford me even  the luxurious lifestyle to which I am now accustomed (that written with a heaping tablespoon of sarcasm)--and may even leave me worse off. I'll save investigation of this opportunity for a day when I've nothing better to do with my time and then go armed with questions.

In the meantime, I found at least 4 good ads for jobs in the paper this week! Woo hoo! (YUP I still think the newspaper isn't such a bad place to find work)
