I work for one of the top five business' in the defense industry. It is a very corporate office. However, all of the staff in which I support are extremely self-sufficient. I am 1/2 through with my first degree (Assoc. in Bus.) and will move on to a second degree (BA in Marketing). I have been in the industry for the last 3 1/2 years. I really like the industry a lot and would  hate to learn anything else at this point. Plus, I make very good salary as opposed to other local corporations. Also, in a year and a half, I should be promoted as discussed with my supervisor, but what until then? I need help from being bored all of the time. I study and do homework when I am not busy but the rest of the time JUST BORED ! Does anyone have any idea's that may help to create work for myself or am I supposed to sit and look "pretty".

Thank You for your support

Welcome to DD!  I'd like to first explain that I moved your post to this forum in order for it to get more viewings and, hopefully, more helpful responses.

For myself, I'm not sure what else I'd suggest. You're already doing studying and working on your degrees, so not sure what else is available to keep you active.  But I'm sure others will be making more helpful posts.

You didn't say what you did, PA/Office Manager??  Maybe you should consider moving into a higher role eg. management - that's if you're not already there.

I'm not always busy but doing things like posting or reading the forums here can help.  The summer can be a time to catch up on other things eg. online training, archiving old documents, emails etc.

Possibly you could create a procedures manual for when you are not in the office.  You could document what your daily responsibilities are and the procedures for carrying them out. That way, if you are out of the office, or on vacation, it will make it easier for someone to come in and fill your shoes while you are gone.

For your paper files, you could make an index of each file drawer to make it easier for others to put their finger on what they are trying to find.

Look around.  Are there things that could be organized better?  Can you check with some of your co-workers to see if there is something they detest doing in their jobs that you could take over doing for them?

Use your imagination.  I'm sure you can find plenty to do, especially if you ask the right people.  I know everyone has something they just can't stand to do in their job and would love to pass it off onto someone else.  Good luck and let us know what you come up with.

My industry tends to slow waaaayyy down in the summer, so I'm always looking for things to do.
I started keeping a list of projects that my bosses expresed interest on. Take a question they ask and expand on it. How can you give them information above and beyond what they asked for. At one time, I created tables based on what we sold that year, when they had only asked me what they sold last year on suchandsuch product.
About every two years, I update their phone lists / directions lists for them. Not very fun to do, but it does keep me busy.
I also wrote my own manual and my own Outlook tasks to help with training and as a reference for when I'm not here.
Any type of organization is good to do during the down time, as when we're busy, we're BUSY!
Summer is also a good time for us to purge out the completed contracts.

Question for you...
Is it not busy because of the time of year or will it continue like this?

Hope this helps..
