Remember my crazy new job, the one where I had ergonomic problems, boss problems, etc.? Well...those troubles are over, and the only one I'm facing at the moment is no income. They let two people go today--me and a guy hired at the same time (but his role was much different). Said they did not have the budget to keep us. I was very professional and even sympathetic...mainly because I was overjoyed to have an easy exit from a very bad situation. I'm hoping to start work again the week of March 24 if I can find something that soon--I think I'll not try to get anything before then, as my son's school has spring break the previous week and it's probably less expensive for me to just stay home than to find care for him.

Whew! I feel really weird--relieved that I'm out of there so easily, worried about the money.

Must be that time of year.

Sympathies Dettu, but as you say, trouble are over.  Take a well earned break and come back fresh and fighting for your next job/assignment.

I got a Dear John letter, no sorry EMAIL, yesterday to say I hadn't got a job I recently attended interview for.  I'm mad, not that I didn't get the job, but the fact that no one could put pen to paper NOR send the Dear John from the HR official who interviewed me - it's the admins that do all the work!

I actually wrote them a thank-you letter after the interview but they couldn't even reply and acknowledge it.

Is it just me or has etiquette gone to the dogs?

Dettu,

I am sorry to learn that you have been "let go" from your new job.  Your remarks about the budget makes one think that the company may be seriously strapped for cash - and why didn't they know they "didn't have the budget" when they recruited?

Week of 24 March is Easter week, so maybe the Easter Hare will bring you a new job instead of a chocolate egg (though both would be very nice). I wish you success in your search for a new post.

Rain, sometimes budgets are cut when it is least expected and therefore action needs to be taken immediately for whatever reason, eg. from a higher level.  Perhaps budgets were set and then had to re-adjusted, who knows.  It's now an every day part of life and very often employees get no explanation.

I'm sorry about the situation - try to relax and regroup.  One door closes and another opens.  Good luck

dettu, sorry about your situation (although glad you are out of that ergonomically bad environment).  Hope things turn around for you quickly.

gee - I know how it feels to be rejected by e-mail.  Same thing happened to me a few years ago.  It was an internal job I applied for that I wanted very badly and felt I had an excellent chance of getting.  There I am sitting in my office with my other coworkers, and I get the e-mail telling me they hired someone else.  What a blow - and I couldn't do anything but sit there and act like nothing was wrong because my co-workers didn't know I had applied for the job.  It was horrible.  I truly felt as if they just didn't care for my feelings at all.  It should have been done in a letter that was sent to my home.

Dettu, I'm hoping that this turns out to the "the best thing to ever happen to you" and that something wonderful is around the corner!

Rain, actually they didn't even DO a budget last year--they did it in February for 2008 and I think that's when they realized they'd taken on too many projects and too many people! Whereas I understood that during my first week there...

Thanks, gee--I knew I'd be hearing from you. I had a rejection by email a while back--all I'd done was send an application, but the position was open and it was driving me crazy. I asked a friend at the company to give HR a nudge either to interview me or tell me no, and they did--by EMAIL. Argh.

I have a date with a placement agency on Friday, but this is the same place that couldn't find a suitable job for me several years ago, so I'm not counting on much there.

Keep your chin up.  One door closes and another door opens.  Might want to apply to a few staffing agencies/recruiters and not have all of your eggs in one basket.  Good Luck.

I sent my resume to a business acquaintance who has an IT contracting firm. I can't work for him, but he sees tons of people every day and can drop my resume with anyone who might benefit from my expertise!
