Do you sit in an open area environment? If so, how do you handle it when you need to make a confidential phone call?

When I have sat in an open environment and I need to make a personal call I try to find an unoccupied conference room. If one is not available then I go to my car and make it from there.

Yes I sit in an open environment but I do not make personal calls at work. I would either step outside at lunchtime or wait until the end of the day.
However my mobile is always on silent should anyone need to get me or leave a message.

We are all open plan too. I sometimes have to deal with confidential matters (salaries or other financial matters) and I use our meeting room in that case (ostensibly I had the phone installed there for telecon's but it works well for confidential matters as I can also move my laptop in there and still see the network and talk.
If I need to make a personal call I do the same thing but use my mobile usually.

I have an office to myself except when Bossie is in and Bossie sits next door. If I need to be private, I close the door. On the very rare occasions when I need to make a call that I don't wish Bossie to hear, I find another office (usually our Chairman's office).

I don't make that many personal calls during working hours, and I too have my own office, so privacy is not a problem.

I work in an open plan evironment. When I need to make a personal confidential call (which is rare at work) I either walk outside with my mobile or if it's work related I go to one of our smaller meeting room and shut the door.

I have my own office which is the off the main office, which is open plan. My boss and I have a connecting door, which either one of us is at liberty to close if we need to.
Last year I was dealing with a lot of disciplinary stuff involving a member of staff, and while I kept our connecting door open, I closed the door to the main office.
I did so because I have quite a clear voice and although I can lower it, sometimes it's hard to forget to do so and because this was so confidential, I just shut the door - obviously that alerts folk to the fact something's going on, but everyone's very good and doesn't ask!
In terms of personal stuff, I would do that over lunch time and on my mobile so would either go out, or again use my office and shut relevant door/s as required.

I'm in an open area, but the person closest to me works from home and commutes in only once or twice a month. If I need to make a confidential call I can duck into a visitors office, or go outside to my car.

I'm fortunate enough to have my own office so I can close the door. At former jobs, however, when I've worked open plan, I've managed to either find a room or will make the call from my car.

Just to clarify, confidential phone calls are not necessarily personal. I used to work in the HR department and had to find a conference room to make many calls. The worst was one of my first jobs I ever had. I couldn't leave an open area desk, but had to deal with social security numbers and confidential information. I wasn't able to repeat the social security numbers back and I just remember having people get frustrated repeating it a few times.

Surely if that was part of your job your employer would have had to provide an adequate situation for you to either leave your desk or have a private room.
If my HR dept or any other member of staff here need to do something confidential related to work then they find a room to do it in. If it's work related I'm sure there was a workaround. Sounds a bit strange.

Why is it that colleagues openly make calls about everything but work?
Eg. ordering stones for a driveway?!
At least wait until lunchtime if you have to make those kind of calls.

I'm lucky enough to have two doors, one to my bosses office and one to the hallway. If I need to close both, I do. It rarely happens, but if I need the privacy, I'll do that, or grab my cell ph one and go find a quiet room, or use our conference room to make a call. Sometimes Gee, when it's service folks they are hard to get ahold of and usually don't have an office staff to answer the phone, they are it. At times it can be difficult to reach that individual during off times. Those are the few exceptions I'll make to making personal calls during the day. Otherwise they should be done on your own time.
