1  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: Abbreviation - Million on: March 12, 2003, 09:29:35 pm
According to my Gregg Reference Manual (p. 131), to express large numbers in abbreviated form (metric style), you would say 1M; M stands for mega, signifying millions.

I don't live in Texas but close by (Oklahoma).  It's very funny and VERY true.  Thanks for sharing.

Okay, I'll bite.  I'm from the United States. Please explain what the difference is between a "PA" and a "secretary."  I've been on this site for several years and still don't recall seeing anything that spells out the difference.  Is a PA like an Executive Assistant?

4  General Discussion / The Humour Zone / Re: You might be from Oklahoma if..... on: December 09, 2002, 11:57:07 pm
Okay, ya'll.... I live in Oklahoma (for the last 21 years) but I grew up in Georgia and South Carolina so most of these apply there as well.  However, the B.C. Clark jingle is special to this area.  AND, I did use the University of Oklahoma (I live in Norman) home football schedule to plan my wedding and honeymoon 18 years ago.  My husband ran a restaurant on campus corner (biggest days of the year are home football game days).  We got married on a Tuesday afternoon (after a home game weekend), flew out that evening on our honeymoon (for 10 days) then returned on a Friday night just before the next home game on Saturday.

5  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: Are You Happy as an Administrative Professional? on: December 06, 2002, 09:28:00 pm
I've been an administrative professional now for 29 years. I've had 3 jobs that I have dearly loved and loved the people I worked with.  I've had other jobs that I was so bored I thought I would die.  I know I am suited for this type of work. I have previously owned my own secretarial service (before VA's were popular), am president of my IAAP chapter; hold the CPS/CAP certification,  and I have SECRTRY on my car tag.At my present job, I'm not treated as an Admin Pro but as a clerical person who answers the phone, orders catering, and makes travel reservations. In other words I don't have to use my brain!!!!!  But for now, the hours, flexibility, salary, and proximity to my home are what's keeping me here.  My dream job used  to be to work in a foreign country or be a personal assistant to a celebrity. Alas, I have children and a husband, so I don't think this is going to happen in this lifetime.  It's crossed my mind lately to check into another line of work. Maybe one day I will........

7  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: Job offer - dilemma on: July 17, 2002, 04:44:01 pm
I went through your situation about a year ago.  I left my job (that I really really liked but had to drive 30 miles one way in 70 MPH bumper-to-bumper traffic) and took a job 6.5 miles from home for more money.  Do I like the job better?  NO!  Do I enjoy my drive?  YES!  My stress level is way, way down, and instead of taking 45 minutes to get to work, it takes about 15.  The extra money was a bonus (plus not having to use as much gas each week) and I went from professional dress to business casual most days.  However, I've not been extremely happy at my new job.  No amount of money can make you like your job.  I think if I had to do it over again, I would probably make the same decision.  I do have more time for my family, and our priorities have changed to focus more on our children and less on our professional lives.  I agree with all the others, you really should make a pros and cons list and go with your "gut" feelings!

Fold the plan and put it in a pocket.  We used to use 9x12 manila envelope, cut off one side and cut the top off at a slant.  Punch the long side and then bind in with the rest of our report.  We'd put the plan inside the pocket.  You could also use a sheet protector to hold the folded plan.

9  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: Medical Trancription? on: June 18, 2002, 04:22:52 pm
I had my own secretarial business about 10 years ago.  I had used a transcriber/dictaphone for 20 years prior to that.  I also went and took Medical Terminology at the local vo-tech.  However, when I went to look into these medical transcriptionist jobs listed in the paper; they all wanted me to have a "certificate."  Meaning that I had to have taken the "courses" at the local vo-tech proving I could do such a job.  Not taking into account that I had taken medical terminology, used a dictaphone/transcriber for 20 years, wrote my own business proposal, took it to the bank, and got a small business loan to open my own business.  Surely, I coud have figured the job out.  So, I didn't even pursue it after that.  I had plenty of other work coming in.

"Here are the rest of the files, the ones I dropped out in the hall.  I just shoved the papers in the closest folder," her boss said as he flopped the rest of the files on her desk.  "I've got to run, there's an 'off-site' get together at the club this afternoon.  There should be enough light to catch a quick nine holes."

"Oh perfect," Kristain thought, "I won't be able to get ahold of him if I have questions."

Although I must admit, this looks like a potential bad situation; I think you should give it the benefit of the doubt.  You never know, he may be looking at houses in Wisconsin for his mother or father to relocate to (assisted living, etc.) and may be interviewing someone to come to work there at your office, or may be interviewing the person who owns the house he's wanting to look at.  I know this is a wild scenario, but I would keep the information you found out under wraps unless he brings it up.  And shame on the other person for bringing it up to you.

12  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Re: A New Scam!? on: June 11, 2002, 09:28:17 pm
We get calls asking to verify our executive's information to receive free magazines.  We finally found a solution.  We tell them we must verify all information in writing; not over the phone.  Well, the majority of these callers thank us, then hang up.  They usually don't call back, so they must take us off their lists.  This all started because one day I had TWO representatives from the same magazine on different lines AT THE SAME TIME call in and want information.  This was after I had already told them to remove us from their lists.  I got really mad and asked to speak to their supervisor who wasn't much help either.  So, our CFO said just ask them to send it to you in writing.  Well, our phone calls for this has dropped waaaayyyy off.  Try it and it might work!

13  General Discussion / Admins 4 Admins / Words of Encouragement on: March 21, 2002, 10:50:59 pm
I've just been asked to give some words of inspiration/encouragement (like an invocation) at tonight's IAAP meeting.  Does anyone have a little poem or story they can send to me privately?  I'd appreciate it.  Searches on the internet have not turned up much and my file of that stuff is at home!  Thanks.
